Met Museum in New York celebrates the influence of punk fashion

Occupied with their black leather jackets, ripped jeans, bondage and messages of rebellion and anarchy, punks 1970s probably never considered a great museum would celebrate her influence on fashion 40 years later.

But the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is doing just that with a new exhibition, "Punk: Chaos at the seam", the 9 Opens May 14 and runs until August

It includes 100 punk styles, ranging from the mid 70s to Vivienne Westwood in London and the shop Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols pictures of examples of the influence of punk, high fashion and designers like Alexander McQueen, Helmut Lang, Miuccia Prada and John Galliano.

Movies and music of the time and a re-creation of the covered toilet graffiti at CBGB punk-rock club in New York, where Blondie, the Ramones and the Talking Heads played to add the grim authenticity of the exhibition.

"Punk was all about celebrating the individual, celebrating creativity and do not be afraid - even in your presentation brave and courageous in your fashion statement," Andrew Bolton, curator of the exhibition, said in an interview.

"Punk was to change the status quo," he added. "I think all this very touching mode."
